Is the global economy heading towards a soft landing, a no landing or a monetary policy hangover? How this plays out over the coming year will decide the outlook for both equity and bond markets. While there is reason for optimism there are also risks.

This complex reality that we find ourselves in, has been dubbed by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as the age of the polycrisis. The WEF’s Global Risks Report 2023 uses the term, polycrisis, to explain how “present and future risks can also interact with each other to form a ‘polycrisis’ – a cluster of related global risks with compounding effects, such that the overall impact exceeds the sum of each part”. In other words, a term that aptly describes the current state of the world.

One essential function that can be affected by the polycrisis, for both the individual and society as a whole, is the global trade and shipment of goods. In 2022, the World Trade Organization reported that the volume of world merchandise trade grew 2.7 percent, and despite the resilience, “Reduced supplies, or the threat of reduced supplies, of essential goods caused commodity prices to spike in 2022” How does the future of International Shipping look and how can companies mitigate risks?

In cooperation with SEB Luxembourg, we are happy to welcome two experts on the topic, Johan Javeus, Senior Macro Economist, and Fredrik Ness, Shipping Equity Analyst.

Johan Javeus is SEB’s Senior Economist. He joined SEB in 2004 and has more than 20 years of experience in Macro, FX and Fixed income analysis. Today Johan’s main focus lies in topical research of new trends in the economy and financial markets.

Frederik Ness is a shipping equity analyst at SEB covering all commodity shipping segments. Frederik Ness joined SEB equity research in 2018. He holds an MSc in Finance and Investments from the University of Edinburgh. Before joining SEB, Frederik worked as a risk and business analyst at Western Bulk Chartering.
